What is GPT-3?

GPT-3, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3, is a language model developed by OpenAI. GPT-3 was trained on a dataset of 45 TB of data, 10 billion parameters, and 175 billion tokens. The model is so large that it can only be run on the cloud. To put this in perspective, the largest Transformer architecture prior to GPT-3 was Google’s BERT model, which had 340 million parameters.

The training data set included the full text of the English Wikipedia (about 2.5 billion words) and curated Common Crawl data sets containing 800 billion words.

The model was first introduced in May 2020. It’s the third version of what researchers call a “language model” – a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses machine learning to generate realistic human language from text samples. GPT-2 and GPT-1 were released earlier by OpenAI in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Why does it matter?

Back in 2016, when researchers at OpenAI first created GPT (the predecessor to GPT-1), they predicted that this technology would “transform natural language understanding capabilities across many applications such as question answering systems or dialogue agents”.

When I heard about GPT-3, I wanted to see what it was capable of. But something about it didn’t sit right with me, either. I’ve built a career as a writer, and the idea of having an AI write for me is unsettling. It’s not just my ego talking; it’s also the growing fear that automation will take jobs from humans.

But like most things in life, this isn’t so black and white. GPT-3 is still very much in its infancy — and while some people are calling it revolutionary, others are skeptical.

But GPT-3 is special. It’s the most powerful language model in existence, and one of the biggest breakthroughs in AI history.

So what makes GPT-3 so special?

Artificial intelligence is getting more real all the time. A new type of machine-learning system known as GPT-3 has been grabbing headlines with its amazing ability to generate realistic text.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a system that can write convincingly human-like text, but what makes GPT-3 so extraordinary is how much it has learned and how little training it required.

GPT-3 is the product of OpenAI, a nonprofit AI lab that grew out of a project at Elon Musk‘s SpaceX in 2015. OpenAI’s stated mission is to create safe artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a system that can learn any task as well or better than humans. The lab’s researchers have been working on systems like this for several years, but none have come close to achieving AGI until now.

GPT-3 stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3” — it’s an improved version of earlier systems based on technology called a neural network. In short, GPT-3 uses raw text from the internet as training data, which means it’s capable of learning just about any subject or task.

The model was trained on a dataset of millions of web pages, consisting of 40GB of text. The training process took thousands of hours across hundreds of GPUs and was estimated to cost between $4 million and $12 million.

AI is transforming the world and we are at the forefront of that transformation. We have already shown how AI can help with the diagnosis of complex diseases such as cancer, and this will be just one of many applications.

It’s not just about how AI can help us with our health, but also about how it can improve our education, security, economy and even our social lives. There are huge opportunities to use AI to improve our lives in all these areas, but there is also a major risk that we could become dependent on machines to do things for us.

The biggest problem with AI is that it’s often used by those who don’t understand its capabilities and limitations, who think they know best. We need to make sure we are using AI responsibly and ensuring that it doesn’t go too far.

One of the big challenges is getting people to understand what AI is capable of doing, so they don’t feel threatened by it or think that machines will take over the world. This is why we are working on a new project called GPT-3 with the aim of helping people to understand what AI does, and how it works.
